About ten percent of this list hates me
About ten percent of this mailing list hates me and hopes that I fail. I’m not troubled by that, it’s merely a common aspect of any list like this.
In fact, that describes every list, every business, every organization — even every church. It might be closer to 5% in some situations or 15% in other situations. But generally speaking, there’s a significant percentage of any organization that hopes for failure.
They are not often vocal about it. If they were, then they would be more likely to get weeded out, but they are there looking for failure. Some may not even realize that they, in fact, feel that way.
I would like to imagine no one hates me. I would also like to imagine my number of haters on this list is closer to 2% or 0.2%.
The truth is, if you are doing anything in life worthy of notice, someone is hating you. I’m not talking about writing books or going on TV as being the threshold for “worthy of notice,” either. The threshold for worthy of notice is more like 1.) not wearing a mask or 2.) not showing a vaccine card or 3.) even daring to ask the question “Why?”
It is a very low threshold.
There are many sheeplike people in the world. That is simply the nature of life, and it is nothing to be troubled about. You must realize that when you pump the brakes on the momentum of the herd by asking the question “Why?” you really make some people pretty skittish.
The more comfortable they have become in never hearing anyone ask “Why,” or even (shocker of shockers) — saying the word “No!” — the more jarring it is when someone like you comes along and does such a thing.
Automatically, you are seen not as the nice person who helps everyone else feel comfortable by going along to get along. You are suddenly a troublemaker of some sort.
That is not anything to ever trouble yourself over. It is a reality of the world to accept just as quickly as you can: if you are doing anything worthy of notice, you have people who hate you.
All this is to say — I know that when I make this next request, some people on this email list who hate me are going to jump into action. So, what I really need is for the other 90 or 95% of people to jump into action as well.
I have written many books in my life. A handful of them appear on Amazon.
If you like what I have written, I would like to ask you to hop over to Amazon and to rate them well. That can be as simple as leaving a high-star review, or even taking the time to leave words in a review. The star review, on its own, also goes a long way. It says to the person considering reading the book, “This book is popular and a lot of people have taken an interest in it.”
While I would certainly love the financial benefit of selling even more books, I am truthfully far more interested in the idea of more people reading my books.
I believe we live in a particularly vital time, and I believe I have particularly valuable words of wisdom and encouragement to share.
Your review helps me to accomplish that. This even seems to work if you have not purchased a book from Amazon. Amazon does not know where you may have read a book and is happy to be a place where people turn to in order to provide reviews and seek reviews.

As I get ready to launch my next book, ELUL 29, It makes sense to ask you to share your thoughts on my existing books or to at least leave a high star review for me.
But I know this much: I have A LOT of haters. A LOT. And do you know why?
Because what I do is effective.
So the haters don’t bother me — not in the slightest.
In fact, I realize this and I hope you do as well — there are some people who it would be an insult to be liked by.
Realizing that, I also know this: when I ask for you to review a book, more haters than supporters are prone to show up, because that is what haters do. They spring into action when they can feel significant in the world.
So please take a minute to go over to Amazon, or wherever it is you like to buy your books online, and leave a high star review.
It will take you about 18 seconds and will be a big help, so please, don’t say that you will do it later, just do it now, or not.
